The region’s rail network includes passenger and freight facilities.
- Bedford County
No passenger rail lines service Bedford County. Amtrak service is available at Harrisburg, Lewistown, Huntingdon, Tyrone, Altoona and Johnstown. In the southwestern corner of the county, freight rail service includes Amtrak, CSX Transportation Inc., and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. Numerous abandoned rail spurs within the county could be reactivated.
- Fulton County
No existing or abandoned rail lines are located in the county. Amtrak service is available at Harrisburg, Lewistown, Huntingdon, Tyrone, Altoona and Johnstown. Hancock, Maryland, which borders Fulton County on the south, is currently attempting to receive passenger rail service to Washington D.C. This would benefit the county and the region.
- Huntingdon County
Passenger rail service is available at the Amtrak station in Huntingdon Borough. Scheduled service is available to Harrisburg, Lewistown, Tyrone, Altoona and Johnstown, with connections to Pittsburgh, Philadelphia and New York City. Two trains service Huntingdon: Pittsburgh to New York City and New York to Chicago. Freight rail service also is available. Crossing the county east to west, freight service passes through Mount Union, intersects with Mapleton, Huntingdon, Spruce Creek and Birmingham, then continues west to Tyrone in Blair County. Numerous inactive freight rail spurs also exist. The East Broad Top Tourist Railroad is one of the best remaining examples of a regional narrow-gauge railroad in the nation. Visitors can tour the facilities and take a 10-mile ride behind a steam locomotive.
- Somerset County
No passenger rail lines service Somerset County. Freight rail service in the county is significant. A segment of Pennsylvania’s “core main line” tracks from Pittsburgh to the Maryland border passes through the southwestern part of the county. Freight railroads operating in this corridor include CSC Transportation Inc., old Conrail and Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad. Also, local rail feeder lines originating in Johnstown, Cambria County cross southward through the county. In addition to these lines, various active short-rail spurs are found throughout the county
