An explosion and subsequent fire at a nursing home in Pennsylvania led to the death of two individuals—one resident and one employee—while injuring 20 others. The explosion occurred at the Silver Lake Nursing Home in Bristol, located about 25 miles northeast of Philadelphia. Authorities suggest that the incident might have been caused by a gas leak, though the investigation is ongoing.
Victims and Injuries in the Explosion
The identity of the employee who lost her life was confirmed as Muthoni Nduthu, a 52-year-old nurse. In addition to the two fatalities, 20 people were injured in the explosion and fire. As of Wednesday, 19 of the injured were still hospitalized, with one in critical condition.
According to Bristol Township Police Chief CJ Winik, the damage was severe, with parts of the nursing home’s first floor collapsing into the basement. This collapse trapped some individuals inside, complicating rescue efforts. Despite the hazardous conditions, authorities confirmed that all 120 residents and staff members have been accounted for.
Heroic Efforts of First Responders
The fire marshal, Kevin Dippolito, commended the heroism of the first responders, who entered the building despite the strong smell of gas. They bravely evacuated residents, some of whom were unable to walk or speak. Chief Winik emphasized that the quick and courageous actions of first responders played a critical role in preventing a larger disaster. He noted, “This could’ve been a much more serious catastrophe. The actions of everybody involved helped preserve life.”
Investigation and Cause of the Explosion
The exact cause of the explosion is still under investigation. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro stated that the preliminary theory points to a gas leak, with the suspected source being located in the facility’s basement. Fire marshal Dippolito confirmed that the investigation would continue in the coming days.
