A 26-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 months in prison for attempting to steal luggage from another passenger aboard a Singapore Airlines flight.
Incident Details
On 7 August, Liu Ming, a Chinese national, boarded a flight from Dubai to Singapore with the intention of stealing valuable items from a fellow passenger’s bag. Liu, who was seated in the business class cabin, targeted an Azerbaijani passenger and his wife. The incident occurred while the plane was in the air, after the dinner service had concluded and the cabin lights were dimmed.
Liu, who was seated five rows ahead of the Azerbaijani passenger and one row in front of the victim’s wife, took advantage of the dimmed lights to execute his plan. However, the victim’s wife, who had woken up briefly from her nap, spotted Liu walking toward her husband’s seat and taking the luggage from the overhead compartment. She immediately confronted Liu, prompting him to return the bag to its original position in the compartment.
Liu’s Explanation and Arrest
Liu attempted to explain that he had mistakenly taken the wrong bag, confusing it with his own. However, the victim’s wife alerted the cabin crew, who promptly notified the ground staff at Changi Airport. Upon landing, Liu was arrested by the authorities.
Despite his claim of confusion, Liu’s actions were suspicious, and an investigation revealed that the contents of the victim’s bag were highly valuable. The bag contained items worth over S$100,000 (approximately £57,625), including cash, a Huawei laptop, luxury watches, cigars, and more. Fortunately, none of the items were missing, as the victim’s wife had caught Liu in the act.
Legal Consequences
Liu’s defense was unconvincing, as his bag was distinctly different from the victim’s, both in appearance and material. Despite maintaining his innocence, the court convicted Liu of theft, and Deputy Public Prosecutor Cheah Wenjie emphasized the importance of preserving the reputation of Singapore Airlines and its tourism industry, particularly in cases involving theft aboard flights.
Liu’s 20-month sentence serves as a deterrent to others who might consider engaging in similar criminal activities on board flights. This case follows a similar incident in May, when another Chinese man, Zhang Kun, was jailed for stealing from a fellow passenger on a Scoot flight.
Liu Ming’s failed attempt at theft on the Singapore Airlines flight serves as a reminder that such offenses will be dealt with harshly by authorities. The swift action by the victim’s wife and the airline staff led to a resolution before any valuable items were lost, underscoring the importance of vigilance during air travel.
