An Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) is an electronic device placed along a roadway to encourage safe travel. ITS includes flashing digital messaging boards, roadside cameras, high wind speed signs and weather stations. They warn drivers of severe weather conditions, changing road conditions, construction, accidents and roadway congestion.
The Southern Alleghenies Rural Planning Organization (RPO), in coordination with Blair and Cambria Counties and PennDOT, developed a plan to inventory and recommend ITS projects for the region. The Southern Alleghenies Regional Operations Plan (ROP) is a living document designed to outline transportation operations projects, programs, and policies to be implemented in the region over the next twelve years. The ROP inventories ITS locations, identifies needs, and outlines solutions to help improve accessibility and mobility through better management of incidents and events that affect the transportation system.
